font-ber.tex defines the Karl Berry names for some PS fonts.
Just look at the file yourself. Perhaps youmust change some
definitions or get the right fonts (and tfm) from CTAN.
That solved my fonts problems -- e.g. my teTeX distrib lacked
the *8t.* files for Palatino, that's why mktextfm was called
and failed.
