The actual console message is: This is pdfeTeX, Version 3.14159-14f-released-20000525-2.1 (Web2C 7.3.2x) entering extended mode {/usr/share/texmf/pdftex/config/pdftex.cfg} ConTeXt ver: 2001.1.19 fmt: 2001.2.10 int: english mes: english "entering extended mode" means that pdfetex actually behaves as eTeX, not as TeX82. It is *possible* btw. that the example tooltip worked ok just because of that. I don't think I have the math core patch installed on this machine.
