How about something like:

draw btex \bf DRAFT etex rotated 60 withcolor .8white;
currentpicture := currentpicture ysized (\overlaywidth-0.5cm);
\stopuniqMPgraphic
\defineoverlay[draft][\uniqMPgraphic{draft}]
