you can do things like:

\usetypescript [sans][karat][map,name]

to load the appropriate defs

actually you can, goven that karat is known

Serif SerifBold Sans SansItalic
Karat KaratBold (or maybe Karat-Bold) texnansi-karat

are all valid in a \definefont
