compare $\hbox{\'e\'erste}$ and $\hbox{\tf \'e\'erste}$ and $\mbox{\'e\'erste}$

\stoptext

what you get depends on the encoding of the font in use, here you'l get

compare garbage and okay and okay

so, you don't need any additional package
