My (working) setup: TeXLive on MacOSX (full installation). This was
installed following the instructions in
http://home.salamander.com/~wmcclain/context-help.html#install. (I only
have a slow modem at home)
I tried to update context, with the same instructions.
1. I unzipped the new version in texmf (is this correct?) and
texhashed, edited etc. Running texexec --pdf myfile gave the errors
shown below (see copy of messages).
2. I removed context and put it in texmf-dist (the original context
seemed to be there?). Same result (see messages).
3. I then tried to install the minimal version from the pragma site
(macostex.zip). There are no instructions and I spent hours trying to
figure out what to do. I then found the following in the archives:
-------------------
you can put the minimal context in for instance
    mkdir /mytex
  after that run
    . /mytex/setuptex /mytex
make sure that the file in /mytex/texmf-linux/bin path have the x flag
set
    texexec --make --all
-----------------------
I tried that, assuming that Mac BSD is close enouth to Linux, but
clearly this was written for somebody who knows much more than I do. I
was told to provide a proper tex root (something/tex), and when I did
(I think), I got a path containing //. Surely, it can't be that
difficult to give step by step instructions to somebody with basic unix
experience?!
Thanks for your help, Jörg

Bill McClain's pages are slowly becoming obsolete, they were
written more than two years ago. I'm not sure if he is still
reading this list, even?

I thought most people on MacOSX used Gerben's i-Installer files
(that is: the gwtex distribution, not texlive). I certainly have
the impression that that would be the easiest way to use/update
ConTeXt. (I'm on linux myself)

Perhaps this page is of help?

    http://contextgarden.net/Mac_Installation

Anyway, you are missing the latin modern fonts. Hopefully, you
can get some hints from the "Install a Latin Modern font update"
section of
	http://contextgarden.net/TeTeX_3.0_installation

the procedure should be almost identical except for the actual
path and (perhaps) using 'updmap' instead of 'updmap-sys':
that depends on the age of our tex-live image)

Good luck, Taco

That sounds like our old nemesis, the latin-modern font metrics. Try
downloading the file http://www.pragma-ade.com/context/current/cont-
lmt.zip , unzip it in your texmf-tree and run texexec --make --all
again, and you should be in business.

Thank you very much. That worked.

Without a suitable internet access (at home) that might not be
convenient. I believe that installing "by hand" will ultimately enhance
one's understanding and help spot errors. And in addition to the MacOS
I have a Linux system, and the problems will be the same most of the
time.

But they still work. I would be willing to write a new version (just
how to get going), provided you correct the mistakes. There are
didactical advantages if something like that comes from a non-expert.

Thanks again, Jörg.

The directory file, "context.www", is renamed to "wget.txt".

In general, you will want to point people to

	http://contextgarden.net

The two website/download mirrors for Pragma-ade are:

	http://context.aanhet.net % mine
	http://mirror.contextgarden.net % patrick's

The mailing list archives are

	http://www.ntg.nl/pipermail/ntg-context/ % one big chunk
	http://archive.contextgarden.net % Lurker archive

The install instructions there are somewhat outside of my area of
expertise, I'm afraid (I don't use TeXLive). But I wrote the tetex_3.0
page in the wiki, and I'm fairly certain that page is still ok.

The typescript section is perhaps best checked by Adam, I believe
he is the most knowledgeable person about that subject currently.

The macro stuff should all be OK still (if not, there is probably
a bug within ConTeXt that should be fixed instead of Bill's code)

Cheers, Taco
