last-name only in bib

Dear Taco,

I need a last-name only option for a few but not all authors, such that no 
comma comes after the last name; rather it goes straight to the year e.g., it 
appears in the actual bibliography as

==============================================
McDermott (1976). The Theology of Shaykh Mufid
==============================================

Right now I get (with spurious comma)

==============================================
McDermott, (1976). The Theology of Shaykh Mufid
==============================================

Sometime authors give me bib's where the first name of the author is 
unknown...

This is bit of a blind gamble, but you can try this definition
instead of the default one:

   % #1 = firstname, #2 = von, #3 = surname, #4 = inits, #5 = junior
   \def\invertedshortauthor#1#2#3#4#5%
     {\bibdoif{#2}{#2 }%
      #3%
      \bibdoif{#5}{ #5}%
      \bibdoif{#4}{, #4\unskip}}%
