Ok, I played around a bit more:
\usemodule[chinese]
\enableregime[utf]
=2E..
H=C3=A4? =E4=B8=AD=E6=96=87=EF=BC=9F

Prints as "H=C3=A4? ***" (* denotes black boxes).

Whereas
\enableregime[utf] % or without this line
\usemodule[chinese]
prints "H=E7=9B=B2? ***" (* denotes three other characters which are not =
=E4=B8=AD=E6=96=87=EF=BC=9F)

In addition I get:
! Paragraph ended before \handleunicodeflowglyph was complete.

Using \startitemize[c] or \placefigure{} with \mainlanguage[cn] shows=20
the proper characters.

Any ideas? Looking at=20
http://www.pragma-ade.com/general/manuals/mchinese.pdf one seems to be=20
able to simply mix European and Chinese letters; ok using {\language[de] =

H=C3=A4}{\language[cn]=E4=B8=AD=E6=96=87} I can combine them (if I wouldn=
't get an error at=20
'}'.

PS: ConTeXt live at ConTeXtgarden does not like chinese at all; the=20
transcript shows:
