metafun assume at some points a cooperation between mp and tex, so maybe 
that piece is failing

does

texexec --automp --pdf yourfile

work?

(if this is time-critical, you can try the minimal linus distribution on 
the website)

btw, best post this to the context mailing list since there may be 
fedora users out there

Strange, so basically only the shapes were taken an not the (in this 
case closely related features)?

So actually the old pre-google fonts from GD are better? Hopefully they 
then stay available someplace.
