Inside the TFM file, it is fairly straightforward to instruct TeX to
create a ligature from "a" followed by "`" to "à".
That is a job for texfont or fontinst, not the font designers'. But
it qualifies as a hack, not true unicode support. Anyway, no point
spending time on it if nobody is going to use it.
