Unless HH knows more about your use-case than what you've sent to the 
list, it looks like it can be summarised as:
\startframedtext[width=\textwidth]
  \startsimplecolumns[n=2]
   \input knuth
  \stopsimplecolumns
\stopframedtext

\setuplist doesn't enter into it, other than his demonstration.
