actually, pdftex now has a feature to manipulate lineheights/depths but i will start using that when i'm sure that this version of pdftex is widely spreak 

you can try to add struts, 

\startsimplecolumns
\begstrut some text ... and more \endstrut 
\stopsimplecolumns
