I'm having a slight problem with generating the formats when I use
newtexexec.

texmfstart newtexexec --make --all

I get the expected output without any errors, e.g.:

ConTeXt ver: 2006.04.18 22:36 fmt: 2006.4.19 int: english mes:

But cont-en.fmt is never actually written to the disk. I searched
high and low, but the only cont-en.fmt is the "old" one, written on
Apr. 17; the same for cont-en.log. Generating the formats with
texexec --make --all works. Is there anything I'm missing?

Best

Try

   texmfstart newtexexec --verbose --make --all

It should report something like at the end

   TeXExec | texformat: 20/04/2006 09:23:30 >
/home/taco/texmf/web2c/pdfetex/cont-en.fmt

Cheers, taco

Taco, Hans,

ran it again with --verbose. What I get in the end is:

hm, maybe some split problem

what does kpsewhich -show-path=fmt report?

i'll send you a patched kpsefast.rb module for testing

I'm really sorry I have to resurrect this old thread, but there is
something terribly, fundamentally wrong with format generation in
newtexexec. I just dlded the latest version and ran
texmfstart newtexexec --make --all
from within the directory where the format files should be written.
After completion, I double-checked, and I did not get a new version
or format file. I then searched my disk to see where format files had
been written. Here's the result:

% locate cont-en.fmt
/Users/tas/.:/Users/tas/texmf/web2c/:!!/usr/local/teTeX/share/share/
texmf-local/web2c/:!!/usr/local/teTeX/share/share/texmf/web2c/:!!/usr/
local/teTeX/share/share/texmf-dist/web2c/pdfetex/cont-en.fmt
/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local/.:/Users/tas/texmf/web2c/:!!/usr/
local/teTeX/share/share/texmf-local/web2c/:!!/usr/local/teTeX/share/
share/texmf/web2c/:!!/usr/local/teTeX/share/share/texmf-dist/web2c/
pdfetex/cont-en.fmt
/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local/pdfetex/cont-en.fmt
/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local/web2c/.:/Users/tas/texmf/web2c/:!!/
usr/local/teTeX/share/share/texmf-local/web2c/:!!/usr/local/teTeX/
share/share/texmf/web2c/:!!/usr/local/teTeX/share/share/texmf-dist/
web2c/pdfetex/cont-en.fmt
/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local/web2c/pdfetex/cont-en.fmt
/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local/web2c/xetex/cont-en.fmt

This looks bizarre, and it is. What happened: instead of using the
path descriptors as handed to it by kpsewhich, newtexexec CREATES the
paths verbatim, so I now have a directory .:/Users/tas/texmf/
web2c/:!!/usr/local/teTeX/share/share/texmf-local/web2c/:!!/usr/local/
teTeX/share/share/texmf/web2c/:!!/usr/local/teTeX/share/share/texmf-
dist/web2c/pdfetex/ inside my Home directory and in other places of
the disk. I hope the description is clear...

Best

Thomas

That is absolutely bizarre! :(

So I also just downloaded the latest, just now, but I have no such
problem (sorry). I have run

  $ texmfstart newtexexec --make --all

after unpacking

   -rw-r--r-- 1 taco taco 3484157 Apr 27 12:21 cont-tmf.zip

to /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf-local (as root)

That gave me the following (correct) files:

TeXExec | tex engine path: /home/taco/.texmf-var/web2c/pdfetex
TeXExec | mps engine path: /home/taco/.texmf-var/web2c
TeXExec | texformat: 27/04/2006 13:24:57 >

/home/taco/.texmf-var/web2c/mpost.mem
TeXExec | runtime: 37.386391

and

   $ texmfstart newtexexec --check

now ends with:

Hi,

Of course I am unable to give an answer. Yet I would like to mention,
that also in the windows environment it does not work as expected. I
found the format files in a
separate directory not in the web2c path. Everything worked after moving
the folder into the correct place.

Yes, I really wish I knew what causes this error. I just checked on
my laptop running linux (Fedora Core 5), and I get the proper output
as well:

TeXExec | tex engine path: ./pdfetex
TeXExec | mps engine path: .
TeXExec | texformat: 27/04/06 15:14:41 > /usr/share/texmf-config/
web2c/pdfetex/cont-nl.fmt

Which as as it should be [however, newtexexec --check does not
perform alll tests as it should]. On Mac OS X, I get at the end:

TeXExec | tex engine path: .:/Users/tas/texmf/web2c//:!!/usr/local/
teTeX/share//share/texmf-local/web2c//:!!/usr/local/teTeX/share//
share/texmf/web2c//:!!/usr/local/teTeX/share//share/texmf-dist/web2c//
pdfetex
TeXExec | mps engine path: .:/Users/tas/texmf/web2c//:!!/usr/local/
teTeX/share//share/texmf-local/web2c//:!!/usr/local/teTeX/share//
share/texmf/web2c//:!!/usr/local/teTeX/share//share/texmf-dist/web2c

I guess that means that it creates, in the working directory, a
directory named : and then the other diretories beneath it. What can
cause this error? I;m running the same pdfetex version on both
(3.141592-1.40.0-beta-20060213-2.2). Could be some config file, could
be the different TDS setup on both systems, could be that OS X is
case insensitive? Could other people check on their computers as
well, that would be helpful.

Perhaps the ruby scripts are confused about the separator on
Mac OS X? (I do not really know, just guessing).

Not very probable since OS X uses the same separator as linux/Unix, /

I meant the "separate paths in env variables" one. Unix has ":" and
Windows has ";".

Hi,

Yet-another-report ;) :

I've installed mswincontext for the first time following the standalone
procedure three days ago. When I have generated formats with --make
--all, the format were put into "pdfetex/*". It works after moving
pdfetex into the right path manually (tex/texmf-mswin/web2c). At the
moment, I thought I have missed something, but I got it working... Now,
after reading the Willi's post, I feel that there is maybe a problem
with latest mswincontext...

indeed, and the test i did was not robust (keep in mind that windows can have c: ; afaik tex live ships with ; as separator while tetex uses :

last night i ran into it as well and implemented a different method of splitting
