Hello all,

I am pleased to announce that the new ConTeXt release from Hans Hagen
can be downloaded as of now from the Pragma ADE website or one of its
mirrors.

The current release has version 2006.06.09, and it is on the wiki as

    http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Context_2006.06.09

This is a relatively minor release, with some optimizations and
a few bugfixes.

More importantly, there is a new beta/latest, with support for
the pdftex 1.40 releases (currently in beta).

Happy TeXing,

Taco

OK, since everybody else seems to know, I'm not afraid to confess
I'm stupid: what are the new features in pdftex 1.40 that the new
beta now supports? I've been running 1.40 beta for a couple of months
now and would just be curious.

The most important thing is that pdftex and pdfetex are now the
same executable that calls itself 'pdftex'; this needs special
support because some of the web2c variables and locations have
changed.

But that is strictly ConTeXt internal. To answer the rest
of the question, here is some information from the NEWS file
(Martin will give a talk at eurotex'06 about the new stuff).

   - 386 grow obj_tab and dest_names arrays dynamically
   - 416 new primitive pdflastlink
   - 427 Character positioning patch
   - 432 Rules in a PDF qQ group
   - 434 Remove queued map item handling
   - 438 \pdfsavepos in DVI mode
   - 443 512 zeros in Type1 fonts not copied anymore
   - 447 Don't write /Encoding for non-reencoded fonts
   - 453 Object Streams for PDF-1.5
   - take PK resolution from "pk_dpi" parameter in texmf.cnf,
if it has not been set by the format file or by the user
   - write out PDF statistics later to make them correct
   - has a large patch from Thanh
   - remove generated pdf in case of fatal error
   - .indent.pro for indent
   - many small fixes to remove warnings from -Wall
   - add some GCC extensions and use *nprintf instead of *printf
     where possible
   - fixed a unicode bug in ttf2afm
   - 466 \primitive and \ifprimitive
   - 467 \ifinedef
   - pdfTeX now sets /ModDate and /Trapped by default (the values can be
     overridden with /pdfinfo)
   - pdfTeX is now pdfeTeX, i.e. there is no way to make a binary without
eTeX support. Also the sources of TeX, eTeX and pdfTeX have been
     merged into one file pdfetex.web
   - strip trailing zeros in fractions of reals written
   - 473 \ifabsnum and \ifabsdim
   - the manual has been updated a bit and is again included

Cheers, Taco

the policy is only to support the latest features when i know that the release is distributed; also, some features will be supported based on version checking

in addition to taco's list ... object stream compression (smaller files) is a nice feature of the latest pdftex

I'm subscribed to the Pragma RSS but did not get this announcement. Are
these things in sync?

They are separate: the RSS reports that there is news at the pragma
website and is generated by Hans, the announcements introduce new
releases and are generated by me.

Cheers,. taco
