no workaround, just a feature:

\placefigure
   [right,nonumber,2*hang][fig:pythagoras]
   {Pythagoras.}
   {\externalfigure[Pythagoras][width=4cm]}

or

\placefigure
   [right,nonumber,2*line][fig:pythagoras]
   {Pythagoras.}
   {\externalfigure[Pythagoras][width=4cm]}

don't rely on this to work at page boundaries
