hm, i only test xetex on windows (two broken macs now) and it works ok; is rlxtools called ? if not you can try 

rlxtools --ident somefile.jpg 

to see what happens 

btw, make sure that you use 

texexec --xtx somefile

i.e. use dvipdfmx and not the other one
