The space gets eaten away by a bug. That will be fixed in the next
release. Meanwhile, you can use this:

[authoretaltext={\ {\it et al.\/}},
editoretaltext={\ {\it et al.\/}},
artauthoretaltext={\ {\it et al.\/}}]
