in principle one could extract them but one also has to make sure that no xforms are used then, otherwise after a few cycles one ends up with many nested xforms; think of something

another option is to use pdfimages (which can extract bitmaps); it's probably no big deal to extend rlxtools with an option do extract the images and give them their original names; maybe on a rainy day ...
