What is the meaning of the separating strings (\13\ ...) between elements? First I thought they were introduced by table.serialize. But trying to index elements showed that they are part of the format. t={ ["at"]={}, ["dt"]={ { ["dt"]={"xmlversion=\"1.0\"encoding=\"UTF-8\""}, ["ns"]="", ["special"]=true, ["tg"]="@pi@", }, "\13\ <--- \13\ <--- ", { ... At a guess, I would assume that that is the textual content of the top-level, that just happens to be only whitespace (backslash + 13 + backslash + <nl> == CRLF). It is useful to retain that, for instance when you want to round-trip an XML file after some adjustments.
