we struggled with this in the past (interfacing) ...

ab.cd.ef = ab.cd.ef (explicit textdir rules)
ab.cd.ef = ef.cd.ab
ab.cd.ef = fe.dc.ba (textdir on components)

eventually i think that we settled to something that worked with the 
examples at that time
