Hi, Hans:

I compiled a simple document (\starttext \input zapf \stoptext), and
get the warning message below:

I don't think it's a big problem,
because Invalid UTF-8 byte
appear in commented lines .
You can try to replace with
iconv -t 'utf-8'

Anyway, also

these are harmless messages; as sort-lan is a mkii file that deals with 
other encodings than utf as well it has examples in those encodings
