mframed is either \framed or \inframed (currently) and there is some 
logic in it

\mframed
\inmframed

\starttext
\startformula
  \mframed[offset=3pt,background=color,backgroundcolor=red]{A = B + 
\inmframed[frame=off,background=color,backgroundcolor=gray]{C}}
\stopformula
\stoptext
