it's just the fallback:

    \edef\prettyidentifier{\executeifdefined{\??ty\??ty\ascii}{TEX}}%

add

\setvalue{\??tp:\c!option:\empty}{\let\obeycharacters\relax}

to buff-ver.mkiv and it will work ok
