you can try to add {} around a pair
anyway, that approach is somewhat obsolete (maybe we should remove the
macros) as in mkiv we have
\starttext
\definedfont[file:junicoderegular]
\kerncharacters{ſaͤſoͤſuͤ}
\stoptext
the next beta will handle the marks ok
