The \' is probably not needed (in mkiv) which saves you some upload time.
Are \iemes etc used in some conversion?
instead of the demo mode you can do:
\continueifinputfile{t-french.tex}
in which case running the file will produce the test section.
Interesting that you put myItems in a macro instead of a buffer.
