They don't seem to do = something that looks as if it is intended behaviour. The only thing I can do by now is using \setupfootnotes[location=3Dtext] = together with \placefootnotes after \stopcolumnset, but I don't like = that very much in my current document. I also note that, whichever method I use to place the footnotes, the = number always ends up in the first column, never in the second (even = with \placefootnotes between \start...\stopcolumnset). I hope someone can give me some insight here.
