You can always define a command yourself, say:
\unexpanded\def\MyBreak{ }
^^^^^^^^^^^
prevents problems in comparisons
\writetolist[...]{...... MyBreak ....}
and then redefine \MyBreak when you include the list, say:
\def\MyBreak{\crlf\hskip1em}
