Due to a rotten, but not very likely to be improved design
of my chart there are connecting lines that run over the same
line in the grid.

Is there any way to avoid that, manually or otherwise?

What about introducing some cell shapes like "left-to-righ over
up-to-down" and so on? If I manage to get some metapost examples
