Hi,

I tried to experiment with protruding -- I want to switch some my document
into the ConTeXt preserving as much existing formatting as possible
(including my private protruding) -- and I found some strange behaviour.

If I define protruding for endash, it works fine. If I define protruding for
the letter A, it does not. I attached the file with an example, resulting
PDF or DVI has endash on the right edge of parahraph correctly shifted out,
A on the left edge is not shifted...

if needed you can define your own protruding settings, see hand-*

hm, maybe a bug in pdftex. This reminds me that we need a font with zero 
chars for boundary cases and protruding boxed stuff
