This took me a while to track down (thanks to fuzzy tex messages):

%D We need a hook into the plain math alignment macros
%D
%D \starttypen
%D \displaylines
%D \eqalignno
%D \eqalignno
%D \stoptypen
%D
%D Otherwise we get a missing \type {$$} error reported.

\def\resetdisplaymatheq
   {\let\normalleqno\relax \let\leqno\relax
    \let\normalreqno\relax \let\eqno \relax
    \let\doplaceformulanumber\relax}

\let\normaldispl@y\displ@y

\def\displ@y{\resetdisplaymatheq\normaldispl@y}

This can go into core-mat.tex (this extends a plain macro)
