Hello,
this is a question arising from a post on comp.text.tex
Suppose that I want to write some sort of encyclopedia. Suppose
also that it's getting that big and that I'd want to split it up
in different volumes. Is it possible to have an index common to
all source files?
In other words: is it possible to use in a document register data
from other documents?

not by default, but it should not be that hard to do; a matter of merging
indexes into one (combining tui's) and extending the index entry with a
file tag

Can you look into it? If not, I think I could do something about
it, but then a plug-in interface for TeXUtil would be *extremely*
useful.

not this week -) it is on my list to support cross document indexes but for
that i have extend the index refs a bit (not that complicated since i
already know what to do);

i know and will work on it
btw, texutil does already merge tui files (search for merge in texutil.pl)
but i never really used it
