the latest versions of texexec generates the format for you, of course you
can always say:
texexec --make --alone metafun

well, i can't help that i'm not a designer, but the tools are there to make
something real ncie -)

my little test grid:
\useMPlibrary[pre]
\setupbackgrounds[page][background=pagegrid]
\setupcolors[state=start]
meta-pre should be in any recent version,
