(1) download the latest version 1.0 of pdftex

(2) say: texexec --make --alone

(if needed get the latest beta version of context, which has a more recent
texexec)

Thank you Hans. I had meanwhile installed TexLive, and then installed
the new version of pdftex. However the problem is now that (like what
earlier Samuel Lacas had complained) I get (2)(2)(2) kind of pattern at
the first page of the document. Apparently he complains this for MikTex,
while my current installation is TexLive.

Well, installed latest the beta version, and repeated the whole
exercise. Seems to have alleviated the problem. Please ignore my earlier
mail. Thanks for the help. :-)

Can you do a grep on the context base path for "(2)" and see if there is
an uncomented one?

Did that, negative results, As I had suggested Samuel with texexec --runs=1
the pattern doen't appear.

so, then can you do a normal run (no --runs flag) and see if there's a (2)
in the <jobname>.tuo file?

This is very technical, but it looks to me like a file open:
	"open paren" filename "close paren"
like you would normally get as well, except that it isn't referring to a file
name but to a file number. I know it sounds *really* weird, but it might be a
broken dll in your windows installation (I've seen this happen with a commercial
distribution before).

Hi,

Alas, even vith "texexec --runs=1", I still get the two's... I agree
with Hans, it feels like something rotten in my DLL kingdom :).

Did you delete 'file.tuo' before running texexec --runs=1 file.tex?

Hmm...No, I did not. But if I do, running texexec --runs=1 file.tex
produces nothing (No pages of output). Running "free", I get three
runs, two being necessary to produce my DVI file.

BTW, my file consists only of "\starttext\stoptext", which is strange
that it would need three runs, though I am not yet very accustomed to
ConTeXt...

Thanks anyway for your help,

Indeed so, with \starttext\stoptext, I too don't get any output with
single run. However if the file has some text then it works. Any clues
anybody? I have not followed the earlier suggestion about broken DLLS.
How to fix them?

That seems to be the default behaviour for Context. Why generate a
document with no text in it? <:)

Just add something like FOOBAR, and you'll get output... <:)

Is there some way to do conditional text in Context or Raw tex?

I am writing a coverletter template, and defining custom commands.

	Dear Sir or Madam:

Is there anyway to test for empty strings, and write stuff like this?

\def\DoIfEmptyElse#1#2#2{\def\localTest{}\ifx#1\localTest{#2}\else{#3}\fi}

That structure has worked for me in the past. I am curious to know if
there is a better solution, though.

\startmode[blabla]
some code
\stopmode

\enablemode[blabla]

\doifmodeelse{blabla}{...}{...}

\doifelse{this}{that}{equal}{not equal}

there's a lot more like this (see cont-sys.tex or texexec --modu --pdf
cont-sys.tex)

Hello,

Indeed, the extra 2's were caused by the "^M" chars in the "tuo" file.
Being not a perl-litterate person, I cannot fix the problem myself,
but I found (thanks Google) that a possible answer would be to add
"binmode THING" somewhere in texexec.pl, where THING is the file
handle of the "tuo" file.

Hope this helps,

sL

Well, my problem is (perhaps) similar to the one posted earlier today. I
have installed tetex (Cygwin). When I run texexec on a file (say
new.tex) I get the following output

 TeXExec 2.1 - ConTeXt / PRAGMA ADE 1997-2000

             executable : pdfetex
                 format : cont-en
              inputfile : new
                 output : standard
              interface : en
            current mode : all
	           TeX run : 1

cont-en: not found

              run time : 1 seconds
[05:14:42][d:/abhi/mydoc/context]>lstat(./pdfetex) failed ...
./pdfetex: No such file or directory
This is pdfeTeX, Version 3.14159-14f-released-20000525-2.1 (Web2C 7.3.3)
**
! End of file on the terminal... why?

Can somebody explain what does "lstat(./pdfetex) failed ..." means.
Also the last statement " ! End of file on the terminal... why?",
