hm, there is actually mptopdf.pl which happily accepts
mptopdf hundredgraphics
or even
mptopdf quitesomegraphics.mp
or
mptopdf only-these-*.*
and alike; another alternative is:
texexec --fig=c --pdf whatever-pattern
all these do what you ask for: nicely cropped pdf's
