Hi,

I have a MikTex 2.1 installation which I updated to the last Context. Now I
want to experiment with fonts. I read both documents on fonts (mfonts.pdf
and mtexfont.pdf), but these documents are not quite obvious for a newbie
like me.

>From the docs I figured out that I should be able to use the times font from
the vendor "urw", because all the necessary files (tfm, pfb and the like)
seem available. Also I looked in type-exa and type-map.tex, but I only have
a clue of what they mean.

Anyway I made a little test file where i use the postscript fonts:

\setupbodyfont[pos]

\starttext

Dit is een testje met het gebruik van fonts

\starttyping
public void main(String[] args) {
  System.out.println("Hello World !");
}
\stoptyping

\stoptext

However, this fails for the following reason:

This is pdfeTeX, Version 3.14159-14f-released-20000525-2.1 (MiKTeX 2.1)

do have the files:

utmr8r.tfm
utmr8t.tfm
utmr8c.vf
utmr8t.vf
utmr8.afm
utmr8.pfb
utmr8.pfm

any idea on what's wrong?

thanks in advance,

Kris,
With root privileges, you need to run

texfont --encoding=ec --batch type-tmf.dat

Page 13 of mtexfont.pdf explains

This should create the files you need.

Hello!

I made a fresh MiKTeX installation and tried the URW font installation
hint given by Nigel King. My old MiKTeX installation was installed at
C:\Program Files\MiKTeX. The space in the path confused texfont, it
complained about "c:program" not found. Installing to d:/texmf removed
this complaint. (However, I'd love to keep my programs in the "program
files" folder, so this should be solved, as well.)

> texfont --encoding=ec --batch type-tmf.dat

This produced a looooong list of errors. I took just one line from the
batch file to make this listing shorter:

  texfont --encoding=ec --ve=urw --co=times --so=auto

The output is pasted under this message. There are a few things which seem
slightyl bad:

1. The source path is "D:\texmf/fonts/afm/urw/times", i.e. both backslash
and the forward one are mixed (thanks, M$, for choosing \). This might
confuse something.

2. Possibly for this reason none of the utm*8a.pfb files was found. These
files do exist in d:\texmf\fonts\type1\urw\times

3. initexmf seems to dislike the command line options given by the script,
at least it shows its usage, which does not look so good.

4. Files ec-urw-xxx.map are created at d:\localtexmf\pdftex\config, and
they look good.

5. When I try to run the test file given by Kris Hermans, the system
complains about missing ec-raw-utmr8a. This might be because such font
does not exist (tfm files are available in \localtexmf\fonts, pfb
not).

6. When I try to run the file ec-urw-times.tex, the system complains first
about missing fmvr8x. This seems to be a euro-related problem. I have
marvosym and eurofonts installed, but can find only .tfm file for the
font.

---

So, what's next? I guess there are a lot of MiKTeX users who'd love to use
ConTeXt with URW fonts. And sometimes even with the local currency symbol.

TIA,

- Ville

Hi,

I experimented a little further with installation of the urw fonts, still
without results. I can only confirm the results of Ville Voipio.

As it looks now, the ConTeXt + MikTeX combination seems pretty useless as
far as fonts are concerned, and It would be great if someone could
investigate the problems. I would be happy to help as much as I can and to
contribute with testing.

Is there anybody out there who has successfully installed third-party fonts
with MikTeX and used them within ConTeXt?

If these font problems persist to frustrate me, I'm forced to:

- either switch to another TeX distribution on Windows, can somebody advise
me a package that installs easily, WITH a variety of fonts? Open Source is
preferred ...

- or switch to another macro package (LaTeX), but I think this is a shame as
I like the ConTeXt philosophy.

cheers,

Kris Hermans.

Does miktex come with the normal texmf (tex live) fonts? If so, doesn't

\setupencoding[default=ec]
\usetypescript [berry] [ec]

\setupbodyfont[pos,10pt]

some text in times

work?

Hans

I don't know about the other persons in this thread, but using the above
code allowed me to create file using the postscript fonts for the first
time using the MikTeX/ConTeXt installation on my Windows machine. Thanks,
Hans.

One observation, my file contained a number of \={o} which should produce
an 'o' with an macron accent. However, using the postscript fonts, the
result was a long dash through the middle of the letters.

This does not happen with the default Computer Modern fonts and it does
not happen if I process the file with an older version of ConTeXt (texexec
reports version 1.9) installed on my linux machine as part of teTeX (with
postscript or Computer Modern). Since the use of the \={o} was in
romanized Japanese, I was able to switch to \^{o} with acceptable results.

Is there anyway to fix this?

I tried it and ... it worked! Thanks Hans!

However, I still think that the installation of fonts with MikTeX should be
looked at. It is not quite normal that for instance the generated file
ec-urw-helvetic.tex does not compile ...

Anyone who has successfully tried out some fonts with MikTeX, I am happy to
communicate!

Kris.

Hi Hans, everyone. I hope you don't mind if I add on a question of my
own here.

That's the first time I have succeeded in getting any font other
than computer modern! Thanks.

The above comes out using the URW fonts. If I use dvips -Ppdf on the
DVI file, they get included into the PDF file. What I want to do is
use the fonts *built into* Acrobat. That way, the file size will be
smaller.

In latex, for example, I did this using the txfonts package:

\usepackage{txfonts}

This ended up with everything in Times-Roman, which did not get
embedded so the file size was minimal.

Could you tell me how to do this with ConTeXt? I don't know enough to
be able to tell if this is really a Context question, but any pointers
would be appreciated.

Also, what is the a direct way to specify a font, (by filename?), without
using all the Context font infrastructure which I do not understand yet.

For example,

..
\usethisfontrightnow[utmr8a]
Stuff in Nimbus Roman No9 L Regular
..

The only reason I want to do this is for testing, there are just so
many layers in the way at the moment that I don't know where things
go wrong.

You should be able to do:

\font\testfont=utmr8a
\testfont Stuff in Nimbus Roman No9 L Regular

This is a good way to test that the map file is defined correctly and
that you have all the font files required.

I have more examples of font defintion in ConTeXt at:

will give you tx etc, same for palatino

embedding is controlled by the pdftex map files; i strongly suggest to
always embed the fonts, since metrics may vary (search for mails from
george white and nelson beebe on th epdftex list for explanations).

\definefont[thisfont][utmr8a at 137pt]

even better:

\usetypescript [serif] [times] [ec]

\definefont[thisfont][Times-Roman] \thisfont ...

that way you also get the encoding related thinsg right

(optionally you can define the interlinespacing)
