\def\lastpagenumber{1}

\def\savenofpages
   {\advance\realpageno \minusone
    \savecurrentvalue\lastpage{\realfolio}%
    \advance\userpageno \minusone
    \savecurrentvalue\lastpagenumber{\folio}}%

when you add this to cont-new.tex, you can use \lastpagenumber
