All the situations you describe above are easily handled. i have no problem with providing support for xindy some day in the future (properly hooked into the index mechanism) but only if there are binaries available for windows/linux/macos-x that work out of the box; a few weeks ago i tried to run xindy on my win2k and it failed. Next time i meet Joachim S. i'll ask him about it.
