depends on the font, from the perspective of tex only the tfm matters (not
the pk/pfb/ttf); the only tricky thing with mf files is that you may need
to generate a lot of sizes

this depends on your pdftex configuration; pdftex can handle pfb/ttf, pk,
and (from past times) glyph containers
