Thanks everybody.

I think we have come close to a solution...

I used the batch file Willy advised me. (Afm2tfm is interrupted, when called through texfont; I don't know why. Everything seems to work normally though.) It generates a lot of font files in a batch. Very handy, I must say!

After that I tried my test file again. Still the palatino font is still not found. I don't know anything about my hudson font.

I guess I still need your help, it's very much appreciated!

With option pdftex there still is an error message:

I do have these tfm variants of uplr8a:

I also tried dvi --> dvips --> ps, but alas.
