you need to be more explicit in what you want to achieve

it's implemented differently in mkiv (vectors are defined in lua) ... 
font-mkiv.pdf has some info about that

as luatex is a bit more efficient min/max/step are less needed and 
future versions might even be more granular.

all protrusion and expansion is dealt with via features so the 
implementation is mostly in lua code
