I don‘t know whether it’s a bug. But this works:

\startsubject[title={Tufte}]%
 With startsubject: \input tufte\par
\stopsubject

It seems that the \start... commands add an extra space. I don‘t know
whether it’s a bug, but this works:

\startsubject[title={Tufte}]%
 With startsubject: \input tufte\par
\stopsubject
