     \startlines
         first: –\space —
         second: --\space ---
         third: \endash \space \emdash
     \stoplines

-- and --- are pseudo ligatures that use the tlig feature which is added 
to each font automatically but depends to some extent to how the font 
has glyphs defined

anyway, using --- is not something recommended
