Ok, so a more fundamental problem. 

Both suggestions you made, work for me:

%workaround1
\ReadFile{type-charissil}
\setupbodyfont[charissil]

%workaround 2
%\usemodule[simplefonts]
%\setmainfont[Charis Sil]

Saves me copying my "fixed" and combined mkiv file after every update.
