in your case:

\startmixedcolumns
     \startlinenumbering
         \input knuth
     \stoplinenumbering
     \column
     \startlinenumbering
         \input knuth
     \stoplinenumbering
\stopmixedcolumns

as it looks like currently tabulate has no numbered line support.
