Ok, I filed the enhancement request to add mem for the filetypes
searched for by kpsewhich. (Yes, MiKTeX 2.1 comes with a Web2C
emulation package which has the kpsewhich program.)
Anyway, for a 'native' MiKTeX solution to the automatic format
generation/placement:
makemem metafun
will create metafun and put it in the right folder (if you want to
know the folder, you can analyze the output from
makemem metafun -n
which in the butlast line says
move metafun.mem c:\localtexmf\miktex\mem
and so you get to know where .mem go).
