I agree: that is certainly counter intuitive. \startalignment[right] should mean "right-aligned", i.e., "right-justified", viz, [ragged left].. I would suggest to Hans to add the following argument options as
equivalents:
[ragright] and [ragleft]. Much more intuitive.
