You forgot the braces around the cell width:

\starttable[|lw(50mm)|c|]
> \NC     \NC {\bf ZZZZ} \MR
1. You forgot the \NC after the last cell.

2. You don’t need the braces for the font switch because font changes 
are always local to a cell.

     \NC \NC \bf ZZZZ \NC\MR
