Is there an already-exsting or easy way to add annotations to equations,
just something like

You can use the \underbrace and \overbrace commands.

\underbrace{f(n)}_{\text{Output}} = \underbrace{\overbrace{n}^{\text{Input}} + 3}_{\text{Rule for Function}}
