Here is a minimal example that better describes my problem.
It seems to depend on the size of the image. 30 mm and 40 mm width works, 35 mm does not.
I have not tested height, although the image I want to use would be portrait format.

\setuplayout[grid=yes]
\setupinterlinespace[line=15pt]
\starttext
\input{knuth}
\startlinecorrection
\placefigure[left, none]
[]{}\externalfigure[cow.pdf][width=40mm]
\input{knuth}
\stoplinecorrection
\stoptext

how can I suppress a blank line between a text paragraph and \placefigure?
I get one there, but I don't want it.

Did you try
\setupfloat[figure][spacebefore=,]
?
or "none" or "{disable,nowhite,back}"

You can set the space only for *all* floats, e.g.

    \setupfloat[spacebefore=...,spaceafter=...]

and not for a single float type only.
