OK, fair enough.  What I don't understand is why do I see ligatures when compiling the following on live.contextgarden.net using pdftex:

\usetypescript[times][ec]
\setupbodyfont[times,12pt]
\starttext
Some ligatures ffi, ffl, fi, fl
\stoptext

in ec encoding there are no ligs in these fonts, in texnansi encoding 
only see fi and fl

tex gyre open type variants (in luatex) shows ffl and ffi
